The Inside Pitch

It’s been roughly 25 days, four hours, 17 minutes and 33 seconds since my appearance on CNN’s 30-Second Pitch. And still no job. But who’s counting. To be perfectly honest, I thought I would get a response from a lot of people, but I didn’t expect to get a job out of it. The good news is I have in fact heard from A LOT of people. The bad news, I suppose, is that I am still unemployed. I did connect with many different people from around this great country, most showing support for my situation. There was a wonderful lady who said I was the most inspiring person she had ever seen on that segment.    She then offered me a job way outside of my field and WAAAAAAAAAAY outside of my comfort level. But to have a “stranger” extend that offer, when many of my “friends” can’t even return an email, for that I will be forever grateful. There have been several people who have expressed an interest in my writing.   (I wonder if they have actually read this blog.) But to this point, th...

Oy Vey, It's Mother's Day

They must’ve been having a sale on Mother’s Day, because this year I got two for the price of one. I told my wife that I was going to take the kids to visit my mom at her assisted living home early in the day so that we could be home for a nice family dinner. Instead of that plan, my wife said that I should invite my mom over to have dinner with us. “It’s the right thing to do,” she said. And who I am to argue. For those of you Sir Bacon long-timers, my mom is doing much better, thanks for asking. It took a while, a LONG while, but I think/hope the docs have finally found the right recipe to end THIS manic episode and get her back on track. For now. At times she is still changing gears faster than a trucker heading down a hill. For example, on the ride home today, she told me that the chef at her facility used to be a cook for a high ranking military official. Then the next sentence -- literally, the NEXT sentence -- was, “I knew David Letterman was messing around with that girl.” No c...

My Animal Planet

Yesterday was a day for the animals. It began early in the morning on a field trip to the zoo with my youngest daughter and her kindergarten class. Since becoming a stay-at-home dad, I have tried to take advantage of EVERY opportunity I can to spend time with the kids. Whether that means driving my oldest daughter to dance, helping coach my son’s baseball team or just bringing cupcakes to school and having lunch with the kids. And that’s just this week. And you definitely don’t have to ask me twice to go on a field trip to the zoo. In fact, due to the one chaperone for every two students ratio, I would say this was a pretty popular assignment. For nearly three hours, our trio visited nearly every animal in the park, from Anteaters to Zebras, Giraffes to Polar Bears. Like many of us who have now reached the age of 43, I’ve been to a zoo about four million times. And I can’t wait for four million and one.   It just doesn’t get old. And to see the zoo through my daughter’s eyes was pr...

So What Would You Do?

It’s time to play the game that’s sweeping the nation: So What Would You Do? A couple of days ago, I was playing a game of video baseball in the basement with my son.  He won 5-2 on an opposite field three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth. Cheater.  But I digress. As I’m headed upstairs, I notice that the area where my autographed baseballs are displayed looks a little empty.   As I go to check it out, I notice there are three balls out of their cases, sitting in the open air on the counter. One of the balls was signed by Joe Dimaggio & Mickey Mantle, one was signed by Pete Rose and one was signed by a bunch of people I couldn’t read. As I headed that way, I could hear my son gasp. These balls, handed down from my dad, hold some serious sentimental value, in addition to some serious financial value as well. So seeing them on the counter with no protection really freaked me out. So What Would You Do? Before you answer, here’s what I did. I used my outdoor voice, ...

Band Of Old Brothers

This just in, I GOT A JOB!!!! More on that in 228 words. Long story short, instead of taking the school bus up to my daughter’s retreat last week, I decided to drive my own car.  In my passenger seat was Mike, the father of my one of my daughter’s best friends, a man I had never met before. In the two plus hours up, we had a chance to learn a lot about each other and I think we both like what we heard. Like me, Mike is in his 40’s, so we had a lot of in common. We both like sports, we both worship our kids and we both LOVE music. Mike told me that he and his neighbors have become obsessed with the video game Rock Band.   Obsessed to the point, where he and a couple of guys from his block have joined together to make their own Rock Band. When he told me that he plays the expert level on drums, I knew he wasn’t kidding. I’m not even sure that Buddy Rich could’ve figured out the expert level on Rock Band. Well after a few months of staring at the video screen late in the early AM...

Games Without Frontiers

Football, Soccer, Ping-pong, Gockey. Name a game and we pretty much played it during our school’s three-day retreat to the mountains last week. And that was just during our “free” time. There was not shortage of activities, which made for some great father/daughter bonding time. She beat me in Tetherball.  By cheating. I beat everyone in Ga-Ga, three times.  By getting lucky. We lost as a team in Ping-Pong.  By two points. After two action packed days, the trip was coming to an end, but not without the finale:  Eco-Stratego, Mini-Survivor meets tag meets hide-and-go-seek Here are the rules -- two teams hide in the mountains... each player represents an animal...  one player on each team is the sun. Find the sun and you win.   Along the way, if you run down someone from the other team, tag them, and exchange your rank. Spider beats fly.  Human beats lizard.  Bear beats Lion or is it Lion beats Bear. Rule book please. As you might imagine, this is s...
